No matter where you are and what you have seen on previous travels: Antarctica is different from anything else you will ever experience. A huge cold-water current encloses this isolated continent. So here in the midst of the open, you will find nature at its most sublime and haunting.

Wildlife
The awe-inspiring landscapes of Antarctica have been virtually unchanged since the first day. It is the coldest, driest, highest and cleanest continent on Earth. There are no permanent human inhabitants, but instead it is home to millions of penguins, seals and birds. During the austral summer, it's a feeding ground for thousands of whales. You can also see shoals of penguins swimming to hunt for krill, the torpedo-like leopard seal, and the singing humpback whale as it is acrobatically breaches the water. Since the first great explorers of the South Pole, Antarctica has been the place for the more adventurous. Today, the activities of the Antarctic are all about the world of climate change, since the world is considered key to understanding the "health issues" of our globe.

Three ways to explore Antarctica
With Hurtigruten you can choose from a variety of expeditions on MS Midnatsol, the smaller MS Fram, or the newest of our fleet, MS Roald Amundsen.

Our discovery ship, MS Midnatsol accommodates up to 500 guests, enabling comfortable and family-friendly travel, ideal for the curious traveler. In 2018/19 she will operate mainly in Antarctica.

With MS Fram you go on true expeditions. The ship is small, so it is the ultimate way to really explore Antarctica, taking you up close to inaccessible rentals. The expedition landings take ashore to see wildlife and sites close up, and also offers the chance to try several excursions and trips that will challenge you, both mentally and physically.

The ship of the future, MS Roald Amundsen, will launch in 2019 and boasts rich Scandinavian design and advanced hybrid technology. She will sail almost silently to fragile natural areas, while reducing emissions to a minimum. Exploration voyages with MS Roald Amundsen covering the Falklands, Chilean Fjords and Antarctica including sailings south of the Antarctic Circle.
